Day of Renewal

In the Spirit through the Eucharist

Jim Cowan and Team

From Steubenville, Ohio

Sunday, April 17, 2005 - 2:00 PM

St. Henry’s Church - San Antonio, Texas

Jim Cowan and Team will perform in concert. The closing Mass will be at 4:00 PM with Fr. Einer Ochoa.

Jim Cowan, composer, musician, lecturer, and praise leader has been at the forefront of praise and worship in the charismatic movement from the early days of the renewal. He has ministered at countless national conferences. Do not miss this opportunity to see and listen to this anointed group. Mark your calendar.

Jim Cowan graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music with a degree in Classical Voice. Jim and his family have traveled and done many musical concerts and Holy Hours. The whole family was invited to sing for the “Fire in Rome” pilgrimage sponsored by the Franciscan University. Jim was privileged on that trip to meet Pope John Paul II and sing for his private Mass. In 1981, Jim began working at the Franciscan University and he has been the Director of Music for all of their Conferences there ever since.

“The year 2004 took us to many places throughout the U.S. and Canada, ministering Holy hours and Concerts in parishes from New York city, to Ontario, to St. Louis. It has been a great blessing to see what God is doing in so many places, and to meet such wonderful people everywhere we go.” Jim Cowan

We encourage all leaders, members, and MUSIC groups to attend this very special Christian musical concert event with Jim Cowan and Team. Bishop Tom Flanagan & Ros Hernandez

What the Pope’s Message means to the Charismatic Renewal

For Pentecost 2004, the Holy Father invited the “Renewal in the Spirit”, as the charismatic movement is known in Italy, to come celebrate Vespers with him on the Eve of Pentecost. With two weeks notice, the Renewal was able to fill St. Peter’s Square and celebrated with him.

The following article, “What the Pope’s message means to the Charismatic Renewal,” is printed in part from Aggie Neck’s article in the January/February/March 2005 issue of Pentecost Today.  Highlights of the Pope‘s message at this Pentecost vigil bring hope and inspiration to the Catholic Charismatic Renewal as well as affirmation and mission.  Here are some of the key phrases: “I energetically repeat what I said on that occasion” (The 1998 gathering).

“The ecclesial movements and new communities are a providential answer, inspired by the Holy Spirit given the present need of new evangelization. This evangelization needs mature Christian personalities and strong Christian communities. I desire that the spirituality of Pentecost be spread in the Church as a renewed thrust of prayer, holiness, communion and proclamation. Conformed by the Spirit in Christ, (the) new man, believers become his witnesses, sowers of hope, agents of mercy and peace.” Pope John Paul II

Come expectant and hopefully leave empowered for a new

FROM THE STAFF:

Bishop Tom Flanagan and Ros Hernandez

Jesus Christ is risen indeed! Glory to God in the Highest!  Brothers and sisters, the period between Easter and Pentecost has significant meaning.  Jesus tells the apostles not to leave the city, for in a few days they will receive the Holy Spirit.  Let us anxiously await another anointing of the Holy Spirit upon us and the whole Church.

The Feast of Pentecost is May 15. In preparation, we ask each prayer group to offer a novena to the Holy Spirit beginning on May 6 and ending on the Eve of Pentecost.  As a special Pentecost event, the Renewal Center will sponsor a "Cenacle of Prayer - 40 hours of prayer" for Pentecost, beginning at 7:00 PM Friday, May 13 and finish with mass at 11:00 AM, Sunday, May 15. On the Eve of Pentecost we will all gather at St. Henry's church for a special celebration of praise, prayer and worship in the power of the Holy Spirit. More details will be in the May newsletter.

We thank you who are continuing to help financially and those who signed the pledges of financial assistance at the charismatic conference. The Holy Spirit is changing hearts and gathering His people to praise Him and adore Him.  Through your generosity, the ministry of the CCCR continues to bless many in the archdiocese and beyond.  God Bless You Abundantly!

The report on the conference (though not all bills are in) looks good.  We should clear $3000.00, which we will try to save as seed money for next year's conferences.  Praise the Lord; we will be ahead of the game.  We were not so blessed last year so this is significant.  Thank you Jesus!

The Youth program is fully moved in and operating at the CCCR.  This is a significant achievement because we are all in one place.  As you know, the youth program is one of our most effective ministries and we must support it whole-heartedly.  This also brings additional costs, which I know The Lord will provide through people like you who have experienced in a special way Baptism in the Holy Spirit through the youth ministry:  God bless you for your commitment, perseverance and dedication to God's work. We are very proud of you. We pray for special blessings on all of you who do this important work. You are truly responding to the Holy Father’s request for us to renew the grace of Pentecost in the life and mission of the Church.

Thank you for praying for Bishop Tom's surgery. As of this writing he is recovering well and undergoing therapy.  He is feeling better every day. He will be returning home for the Easter weekend. Alleluia!

May the Lord bless you, your groups and ministries for bringing the joy of Pentecost to the Church.  Remember to pray for us as we pray for you.

In Jesus,  Rosbel Hernandez Director and Associate Liaison

SPECIAL LEADERS SECTION By Ray Rossman

Be All That You Can Be!! For several years the US Army challenged potential recruits to enlist so that they might achieve more than they otherwise might attain. The US Marines also tried a recruiting campaign that featured the slogan, “We’re Looking for a Few Good Men.” Jesus also is recruiting – but he wants more than a few –he wants us all – men and women – to be ALL that HE wants us to be! How sad it is to see so many people be baptized in the Holy Spirit and experience the power of the Holy Spirit yet fail to adjust their lives to become ALL that they can become. St. Paul tells us in 1 Timothy “to fan into flame” the gift of the Spirit that we have received. In Revelation, Jesus tells us that he would want us to be hot or cold but because we are lukewarm, he will vomit us out of his mouth. Wow! What a message!

Where do we go from here? I think that the Spirit puts the inspiration in our hearts to grow, but Satan tries to tell us that if we go deeper into the Lord, our families will suffer or that others will label us “fanatics” or “weirdoes” or some other term. Jesus calls us servants. Take a look at a couple of suggestions to see if you are growing or slowing: 1) Are you reading the Scripture daily or occasionally? 2) Are you praying every day and using the gift of tongues or asking God to give you the gift if you don’t have it now? 3) Are you listening to tapes of recognized gifted speakers or reading their books? 4) Are you coming to prayer meetings with a Scripture or praise report to share or are you coming every week to be entertained? 5) Are you sharing your good news of Jesus with family and friends or are you embarrassed to talk about “religion” with them?

I think that the message of Easter is that Jesus is ALL that he can be for us and that he invites us to a life that is far beyond our wildest dreams if we choose to allow him to lead us to that life. Today when I look back on 33 years of experience with him, I see a life filled with joys and sorrows, mountains and valleys, and I see a life that I wouldn’t trade with anyone! Jesus IS the WAY the TRUTH and the LIGHT! Take him at his word and “Be All that Jesus Wants YOU To Be.”

God Bless You!  Ray Rossman
