FROM THE STAFF:

Bishop Tom Flanagan and Ros Hernandez

Happy and Blessed New Year!  Come Holy Spirit, come! Renew us as in a new Pentecost, with zeal for the proclamation of the Gospel and love of His people.  All glory, honor and praise to Jesus, The Lord.

Filled with hope and faith, we boldly proclaim this year of the Eucharist to also be a year of Evangelization in the power of the Holy Spirit.  We challenge every prayer group or ministry to have a life in the spirit seminar (LSS) this year, especially between Ash Wednesday and Pentecost; to have a follow-up spiritual growth seminar; to attend the annual charismatic conference; and to support the days of renewal (English and/or Spanish) sponsored by the Archdiocesan Charismatic Center.  We pray for a revival of the Renewal in the spirit of unity.

In preparation for the Jubilee year, Pope John Paul II asked the Church to focus on the role and charisms of the Holy Spirit and the NCCB Ad Hoc Committee for the Catholic Charismatic Renewal issued a statement of affirmation, support and encouragement to those who have experienced the release of gifts and charisms of the Holy Spirit-known as baptism in the Holy Spirit (Grace for the New Springtime).

This emphasis on Evangelization in the power of the Holy Spirit must continue and we exhort you to “Move it Out!” as Father Tom Forrest challenged us in his book by the same name.  We must “row out into the deep, cast your nets for a catch.”

The regional charismatic conference is fast approaching (26/27 Feb.). Register before January 20th to get the discounted price.  We really need your help in early registrations so we can pay for the convention center.

This last year was a blessing in so many different ways but the summary would be that the people of God responded generously in their giving of talent (gifts), time, and treasure.  Thank you for responding to the call of the Spirit.  May the Lord bless you abundantly in 2005.

Special Leaders Section By Ray Rossman

Teaching People to Live! As we start 2005, I think it’s important for us to take an inventory of our lives and specifically to ask ourselves, “What’s my life all about?” The natural follow-up to the first question is a second one, “Am I fulfilling God’s purpose for my life?” I think one of the most powerful books that has been written in a long time is, The Purpose Driven Life by Rick Warren. He lays out 5 purposes that he feels are at the core of life: 1) You were planned for God’s pleasure; 2) You were formed for God’s family; 3) You were created to become like Christ; 4) You were shaped for serving God; 5) You were made for a mission.  We have been blessed to have been born into a faith that is centered about the person of Jesus Christ who came to earth 2000 years ago to show us how to live our lives here and now and to show us the promise of eternal life with him. St. John tells us in Chapter 1that although Jesus came, “the world did not know him.” I think that what we have received as a gift – our faith in Jesus – we MUST pass on to those who don’t know him. We need to teach them how to live.

It’s all about Him! Life means nothing without God and our first lesson of life is that God is the center of our life and we urge others to make him the center of their lives. God wants us to acknowledge him as Lord and to depend on him for EVERYTHING – our health, our finances, our jobs, our children – EVERYTHING! Secondly, we need to make GOOD CHOICES. Wisdom is sometimes defined as the ability to choose something today that you’ll be happy with tomorrow. Many people make their choices only on their feelings especially those of self-gratification – “If it feels good – do it!” We can show them that the power of the Holy Spirit has been given to help us make the RIGHT choice – EVERY TIME! When we surrender our will and ask God to let his will be done in us, the Spirit will keep us on the right path – that’s His job – that’s His purpose. So many people fail to take advantage of God’s gift to us of the Spirit.

Finally, we need to show people how to love as Jesus taught us to love. The most effective evangelization is when we love another one-on-one. Ask God to put people in your life that he needs you to love. Then wait and watch! God will show you who to love and how to love. Let’s make 2005 a special year of purpose – God’s purpose for us fulfilled today and tomorrow!

God bless you. Ray Rossman
