CENACLE OF PRAYER, PENTECOST WEEKEND – San Antonio, Texas

CCCR in San Antonio: Members from all over San Antonio attended the 40-hours of Prayer and adoration of the Holy Eucharist. There’s always power in the Eucharist, but a dedicated period of time on the eve of Pentecost by believers in the power of the Holy Spirit is a special treat to Jesus and an anointing to those who gather at the “Cenacle” (Upper Room). God bless all who participated in any way.

CENACLE OF PRAYER FOR THE AMERICASMiami, Florida

The international gathering of Charismatics from the Americas for the 40-hours of worship on Pentecost weekend was a special blessing, especially for the United States. All nations in the hemisphere were represented, from Cardinals, bishops, and priests/deacons/religious to lay men and women in their native dress praising and worshiping the Lord in their native language and in tongues. I was humbled and honored to be a part of such a gathering. Glory and Praise to God.

FROM THE STAFF:

Bishop Tom Flanagan and Ros Hernandez

Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today and forever! The 40 hours of Prayer at the CCCR during the Pentecost weekend certainly reminded us that Jesus is Alive in the Holy Spirit and continues to transform His people.

Pope John XXIII prayed before the Second Vatican Council: “Renew us as in a new Pentecost.” God answered the prayer by giving the Church this great movement of the Spirit called Charismatic Renewal and whose vision is: To renew the grace of Pentecost in the life and mission of the Church.

Perseverance in the power of the Holy Spirit will overcome all obstacles. Every person who has been touched by God with this special grace should not sit idle for one moment. Come to the meetings and be renewed again so that together we can help the Church renew the grace of Pentecost in the “New Evangelization” which Pope John Paul II said should be new in its “ardor and zeal.”  That my brothers and sisters, is what we do!

The Cenacle of Prayer for the Americas in Miami on Pentecost weekend showed us that unity in the Spirit, whether in the small groups or internationally, is very important in answer to Jesus’ prayer “that all may be one” (John 17:20). I (Ros) witnessed the power of unity when members from all over the Americas gathered in front of the Eucharist and humbly surrendered to Christ.  We prayed for a new anointing for the Americas. Let’s do our part, let’s claim that gift so that together we can bring that grace to every person in the Archdiocese and beyond.

Fiesta con Cristo - Concierto y Cena.  A Fiesta with Christ – Concert & Dinner will be held on June 24th at 6:30 p.m. at St. Henry’s Hall to raise funds for the “lean” months of June - September. A letter is being sent to leaders with tickets.  Please be active in promoting this event.

Archdiocesan Service Committee. We thank Ray & Mary Ellen Rossman for their service to the Committee. Ray served as chairman and Mary Ellen served as secretary. Ray was also Conference Coordinator. He and Mary Ellen did an outstanding job in coordinating events and leading the Renewal and they will continue to work with the CCCR as needed. We welcome James and Terri Chavez and Fr. Will Combs. James is the new chairman.  They bring with them experience in leading youth groups and zeal for Evangelization in the power of the Holy Spirit.

“Domingo Carismático” will be on June 26. Mr. David Herrera and his group of “Evangelists” will lead the praise and worship and preach the Word of God. Fr. Pedro Molina will celebrate the Mass and lead the healing service.

Remember, there’s always more.  Lets continue to pray for one another that “all may be one.” God bless each of you, your families, and your prayer communities.

SPECIAL LEADERS SECTION by Ray Rossman

June 2005 - The Spirit is moving in Latin America!! On Pentecost, I read an article in the May 13 edition of Today’s Catholic that highlighted the growth of Catholic Charismatic Renewal in Latin America. The story was a summary of a report presented by Prof. R. Andrew Chesnut of the Univ. of Houston to a recent conference at Notre Dame University. I located the full report through the internet and found it to be enlightening, encouraging and disturbing. The enlightening and encouraging portion pointed out that CCR is growing dramatically especially among the poor in Brazil, Guatemala and other Latin countries. It’s estimated that there are about 10 million Charismatics in Brazil – about 50% of active Catholics.  Evangelization and the gifts of the Holy Spirit –especially healing – go hand-in-hand and many former Catholics who left the Church to attend Pentecostal Churches are returning to the Catholic Church. There is widespread use of television and radio to spread the Gospel message. Prof. Chesnut says “The charismatic renewal has developed into the largest and most animated Catholic lay movement in Latin America. ” The disturbing part of the report says that the Bishops in these countries, for the most part, view CCR as a means of combating the rise of Pentecostalism and not necessarily as an authentic movement of the Holy Spirit that they need to personally embrace and actively encourage.

What can we learn from this? I am often reminded that the CCR is a gift to the Church today and that those who are called to leadership have an obligation to the Holy Spirit to allow Him to actively work within us and through us. We have an obligation to seek intimacy with God on a daily basis and to use the gifts to promote the common good of the Body of Christ. I might use the analogy that choosing to live our Catholic faith with the power of the Spirit is akin to a choice of seats at a Spurs playoff game. Do you want to see the game from the first row or from the upper balcony? We need to stay involved in the CCR and not allow Satan to distract or discourage us and we need to recognize that when we see people drawn into the reality of “Jesus Is Lord” we are involved in a miraculous work of the Holy Spirit that Christ has asked us to do.

God Bless You!   Ray Rossman

FR. EINER OCHOA’S 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF ORDINATION

The celebration at St. Agnes on May 22, to which all the “movements” were invited, was blessed with the spirit of unity. Leaders from the different streams of the renewal were presented to Archbishop Gomez. Each leader spoke briefly as to what their ministry is in the Archdiocese. Ros Hernandez spoke on behalf of the Charismatic dimension of the Church. Thanks to attendees who represented the charismatic renewal. May God continue to bless Fr. Einer with all the supernatural graces of the Holy Spirit as he serves the Body of Christ, the Church.
