Pope Benedict XVI Signals Support for Ecclesial Movements:

"With Paternal Affection," Says Cardinal in Message to Charismatic Gathering. VATICAN CITY, APRIL 26, 2005 (Zenit.org).- Pope Benedict XVI will continue to guide "with paternal affection" the ecclesial movements, associations and communities, which were nurtured by Pope John Paul II, says the Vatican's secretary of state.

Cardinal Angelo Sodano confirmed the new Pope's intentions in a message sent Friday to the national congress of Renewal in the Spirit, which gathered 25,000 people in Rimini, Italy. That event ended Monday.

The letter, signed by Cardinal Sodano, included the Holy Father's apostolic blessing. The document expressed the Pope's satisfaction to send, "at the start of the ministry of the Successor of Peter," "a special thought" to all those gathered in Rimini for the occasion: bishops, priests who assist the movement's groups and numerous faithful from Italy and abroad.

"The beloved and venerated John Paul II, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit as he was, guided with great care the path of the ecclesial movements, associations and communities," said Cardinal Sodano in his letter.

"With paternal affection, His Holiness [Benedict XVI] wishes to continue this service, so that the gifts that the Lord dispenses to his Church will be fully appreciated and oriented in the best way for the building of the Body of Christ which is the Church," the Vatican secretary of state said.

Pope Benedict XVI assured the meeting "of a special remembrance in prayer, invoking the heavenly intercession of Mary Most Holy" so that, "as [in] the first community gathered in the Cenacle," she will preside spiritually over the "assiduous and harmonious" prayer of the participants, "obtaining a renewed effusion of the Paraclete," the letter said.

With a strong call to unity, in remembrance of John Paul II, and with his thoughts focused on Benedict XVI, Salvatore Martinez, Renewal's national coordinator, closed the meeting on Monday.

"Benedict XVI tells the truth: The Church is alive!" he said, recalling the Pope's words on the eve of the solemn Mass for the inauguration of his pontificate.

Renewal "will never cease to cry out with the Pope that the Church is alive because it is inhabited by Jesus Christ alive and animated by the Holy Spirit," Martinez added.

FROM THE STAFF:

Bishop Tom Flanagan and Ros Hernandez

God is good. God is very good! We thank and praise God for Bishop Tom Flanagan and his recovery from the knee operation.  As of this writing, he is doing Confirmations. He is feeling stronger and eager to get back to work.  May the Lord continue to heal and strengthen his leg.

What a blessed day we had with Jim Cowan and his ministry at the day of renewal on April 17th.  We needed that “lift” and thank the Lord for sending him to us at this time between Easter and Pentecost. May God bless him and his ministry.

For those of you who already scheduled life in the spirit seminars and the Novena to the Holy Spirit, thank you.  Pentecost is the appropriate time for renewal because that is our mission:  to renew the grace of Pentecost in the life and mission of the Church.  It’s a time to praise and thank the Lord for giving us the most precious gift he could give us: The Holy Spirit and all the gifts and charisms listed in the New Testament, that we may serve Him in the fullness of the Spirit. Glory to the Living God!

The 40 hour-Cenacle of Prayer schedule has changed.  It begins at 7:00 AM on Friday and ends at 11 PM on Saturday night at St Henry’s church. This will be a continuous time of praise, prayer, and adoration. It will be in the chapel Except for Friday night (Upper Room) with the youth, and Saturday from 7:30 to 11:00 pm (in the church). We will all do the last day of the Novena together on Saturday. Come rejoice in the fullness of the Spirit.  Come Holy Spirit, enkindle is us the fire of your love.

Congratulations to Fr. Einer Ochoa, on his 20th anniversary as a priest on May 22.  He especially invites all the ministries and members of Charismatic Renewal and the Cursillo movements to come celebrate with him at St. Agnes at 3:00 p.m.  Archbishop Gomez is main celebrant. See announcement elsewhere in the CharisLetter.

May the Lord bless you indeed.

SPECIAL LEADERS SECTION by Ray Rossman

Are you ready for Pentecost?  Father Richard Rohr OFM in his book, “Why Be Catholic” makes the point that many Catholics are “sacramentalized but not evangelized”. What he means is that often Catholics attend Mass and receive Eucharist without a deep commitment to Jesus Christ as Lord of their lives. They go through the motions without any emotions where it matters most – Jesus Christ, Son of God.  Evangelist Benny Hinn recently noted that although many people don’t reject Jesus, they have just learned to “live without Him.” Father Carlisle Blake CSSR at a parish retreat challenged us to be “Pentecostal People” deeply committed to Jesus and (the word “creed” in the original Greek means “committed to”) and committed to fulfill our mission to preach the good news to all the earth – in other words, to evangelize. “How do we do that?” you ask. Well, that’s where Pentecost comes in.

Dr. Bob Rice in a recent talk in San Antonio reminded us of the occupants of the Upper Room on the first Pentecost. “But,” he said, “I’ll tell you who wasn’t there – not one member of the Assembly of God Church. They were all Catholics. We have the same Holy Spirit today as they did 2000 years ago but unlike the first Christians, many Christians today don’t believe that God can do the same miracles in Texas or California as He did in Judea and Galilee. So many think that the Church today depends on the gifts of the bishops and priests not on the gifts of the Holy Spirit that we ALL have received in Baptism and Confirmation. We give excuses as to why God would never use me instead of praying with the promises of Jesus from Scripture on our lips. Evangelization is nothing more than living your life everyday in such a way that people see Jesus living in you. If Christians don’t present a lifestyle that is desirable to the world then we have failed in our mission. This year on Pentecost ask the Holy Spirit to renew the graces of Confirmation within you and EVERY DAY ask for a fresh infilling of His power. (We leak!!) Then speak and act with boldness just as Peter and the Apostles did long ago. Evangelization is OUR job. Equipping us for the task is the job of the Holy Spirit. Let’s roll, friends. There’s a whole lot of people waiting for us!!

God bless you!

 Ray Rossman
