INSTITUTIONAL &
CHARISMATIC DIMENSIONS OF THE
“Let yourselves be
inflamed by the fire of the Spirit, so that a new Pentecost may be created
among you and renew the Church.” (Benedict XVI, World Youth Day 2005,
Time
and again, the writings from the
The
Pentecost celebration reminds us of what happened at that first Pentecost (Acts
chapter 2), the birthday of our Church and the way the Church is supposed to be
like. The apostles were baptized in the Holy Spirit and the gifts or charisms
as listed in 1 Cor 12 were evident as they went out proclaiming in great power
(in the Holy Spirit) the Kerygma (the basic gospel message). Thousands were added daily and signs and
wonders followed those who believed!
The
message from the Holy Father to foster the culture of Pentecost means just
that: proclaim the Gospel message in its fullness; use the charisms in the “New
Evangelization, new in zeal, in methods and in expressions.” (Pope John Paul
II, 1983) so that those renewed can
witness or testify to the change Christ made in their lives; and zealously
pursue more of the Holy Spirit in their lives.
It
is very clear that the Pope wants the church to be renewed as in a new
Pentecost. Still, there are those who do not accept what the Holy Father is
saying. Some are still against charismatic renewal; some tolerate it; some say
its ok but it’s not for them; and some embrace it as they experience the new
life in the spirit.
The
apostles and their followers were persecuted in their time for zealously
proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
Today, Charismatic Renewal, in following the instructions from the Pope
to foster the culture of Pentecost, also are sometimes looked at as
“overzealous” and outside the mainstream, sometimes not even allowed to have a
prayer group, even though the hierarchy have stated that the Renewal is not on
the fringes of the Church but is Central to the life of the Church.
Pope
John Paul II stated,
“there is no conflict or opposition in the Church between the institutional
dimension and the charismatic dimension, of which the movements are a
significant expression. Both are
co-essential to the divine constitution of the Church founded by Jesus,
because they both help to make the mystery of Christ and his saving grace
present in the world.”
We
exhort all who are involved in charismatic renewal and indeed to all Catholics,
be docile to the Holy Spirit, as the Holy Father has told us to be, and be obedient
to the shepherds appointed over us (institutional - hierarchical or charismatic
dimension). Love conquers all things and as the song says, “they will know we
are Christians by our love.”
Our
prayer is from the Gospel of John 17:20-21-23: I do not pray for them
alone. I pray also for those who will
believe in me through their word, 21) that all may be one as you, Father, are
in me, and I in you; I pray that they may be one in us, that the world may
believe that you sent me. 23) I living in them, you living in me – that their
unity may be complete.

HAPPY
AND BLESSED NEW YEAR 2006! The Lord and Savior of the world, the King of
kings and Lord of lords, Jesus, the Son of God, is with us for all eternity.
Praised be His Holy Name now and forever!
Brothers
and sisters in the Lord, what a magnificent year the Lord gave us. Let us be
glad and rejoice in His goodness and mercy.
The blessings came from all directions and from all ministries. Thank
you for your time, your talent and gift of service in renewing the grace of
Pentecost in the life and mission of the church.

Remember
the Vision of Charismatic Renewal: Renewing the grace of Pentecost in the
life and mission of the Church. Our mission statement is clear: To stir into
flame the grace of Pentecost within and beyond the Church, to broaden and
deepen the understanding that Baptism in the Holy Spirit is the Christian
inheritance of all, and to strengthen the Catholic Charismatic Renewal.
As
we enter the New Year, let us keep this in mind and recommit ourselves to
serving the Lord in whatever capacity or area He places us. Let us be docile to
the Holy Spirit, firm in our commitment, bold in proclamation of the Gospel
message and loving and kind to one another.
May
the Lord Jesus Christ remain in our hearts and may He rekindle the fire of the
Spirit in our every day life. God’s blessings be yours throughout the New Year
and remember to pray for us as we pray for you.

LIVING IN THE
SPIRIT by Ray Rossman
“Go
into the whole world” – even
God wants to transform you as you give
yourself to the Holy Spirit as an evangelizer.” I take these words very seriously. The
question we must all ask ourselves is, “Am I an evangelist or a prayer group
member?” The Holy Spirit doesn’t just want nice prayer groups. He wants his
Church renewed.
“Here
I am, Lord. Send me.” Our conference theme this year was chosen to invite us
all to become better evangelists. For too many years, we have depended on
priests, deacons and nuns to spread the gospel, but now we live in the era of
lay evangelism and we ALL must be willing to step into the arena and speak up
for Jesus. You might ask yourself, “When was the last time I talked to someone
about Jesus?”
My
wife recently told me about one of her prayer group members who felt the Spirit
telling her to talk to a stranger while food shopping at HEB. When she approached
the woman and asked if she needed prayer, the woman responded, “I can’t believe
God loves me so much that she sent someone to pray with me here!” Sharing Jesus
may not mean a missionary experience in
If
you want to learn how to do this – EFFECTIVELY – THEN COME TO THE CONFERENCE!
Learn from some of the best Catholic lay evangelists – Lloyd and Nancy Greenhaw
and Greg Trainor! Another suggestion – bring a friend or two that needs to meet
Jesus! God bless you! God bless you.

Let
our new year not be about giving something up or losing so many pounds, or
other “New Year’s Resolution” as we call it. Why not let your new year’s
resolution be a prayer to God so that we can be less of ourselves and more of
Him vibrant in us. For it is when we surrender to God that He finds favor in
our lives.
Just
remember this, if you forget all of these words or where they came from you
will loose nothing, but if you meet Jesus and forget Him you have lost
everything. So, my prayer for all of you is that you come to know Jesus as your
Lord and Savior and that you never forget to call on the name of Jesus in time of trouble.
Remember
to: Dance as though no one is watching! Sing like no one is around!
